An emergency wisdom tooth removal can be required as some people experience significant pain as these teeth start to progress in their growth. Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that begin to grow in during your late teens or early twenties. Not everyone has wisdom teeth, and not everyone who has wisdom teeth has problems with them. At your regular dental checkups, your dentist will check on the progress of your wisdom teeth, and if they look like they’re going to cause problems, they’ll recommend wisdom tooth removal. Our qualified dentists can determine if your wisdom teeth need to be removed. If this is the case, we can extract your wisdom teeth so that they do not affect your other teeth.
Reasons to Have Wisdom Tooth Removal in Winnipeg
As mentioned above, not everyone’s wisdom teeth need to be extracted. You may need wisdom tooth removal if:
- You have pain in your ears or jaw
- There is overcrowding in your teeth
- They are causing misalignment in your teeth
- They become impacted and don’t erupt through your gums
- Your gums are swollen or sore
- The wisdom teeth prevent you from getting braces
- Your wisdom teeth are growing in crooked
When wisdom teeth align properly they do not have to be removed, but they most often grow in at strange angles and cause problems with your other teeth. If your wisdom teeth are partially impacted, bacteria can grow and cause an infection which results in pain, swelling and illness. If not taken care of, your wisdom teeth can also cause problems with your jawbone. To prevent such problems, you should get your wisdom teeth removed when they don’t grow in straight.
How Wisdom Teeth Are Removed
Before your wisdom tooth is removed, you will have a consultation with your dentist where you’ll discuss sedation and local anaesthetic options so that you can have an anxiety-free procedure. During the removal process, your dentist needs to remove the visible part of the tooth as well as the root that keeps it in place.
There are special tools for loosening and removing your teeth, called forceps and elevators. Dentists most often begin tooth extractions using an elevator to loosen the tooth. They then use the forceps to pull the tooth out of the socket. Sometimes wisdom teeth are impacted and don’t come out quite so easily. If this is the case, your dentist may have to break the tooth into pieces to remove it.
Because of the sedation used, you will need someone to drive you home after your appointment and help take care of you for the rest of the day. You will be given some special instructions for aftercare to help you avoid infection and promote healing after your wisdom tooth removal.
